avanos valley

18 km north of Nevşehir is Avanos, one of the most spectacular places in Cappadocia. Avanos, or “Venessa” as it was known in antiquity, dates back to the Bronze Age and was later a waypoint on routes during the Byzantine and the Seljuk Empires. The area looks as if it has been almost deliberately decorated with fairy chimneys. It also harbours valleys with fascinating sceneries, and frescos and churches carved into the rocks that have somehow survived since antiquity. The taste of the grapes grown on the skirts of the mountains of the region is delicious to the point of perfection. Avanos is dissected by the Kızılırmak river, dyed red due to the soil over which it flows over and which is in great demand for making distinctive coloured pots, bricks and roof tiles.

bozdağ valley

Bozdağ is one of the major sites populated by the fairy chimneys which make up the defining image of Cappadocia itself. Wandering around the amazing spectacle of the fairy chimneys in various shapes and sizes standing in their fungal shapes and with their “hats” on and exploring the houses and churches carved into the rock formations are the centrepiece of the Cappadocia experience. The valley, once a favourite retreat for Anchorites (reclusive monks), is also somewhat unsurprising known as Monks or Priests Valley. The Bozdağ mountain looking down towards the Çavuşin is another splendid site for a 360-degree view of the Cappadocia landscape and both Çavuşin and Bozdağ are ideal locations for taking photographs and being captivated by the spectacular landscape. This is also a great place for a wonderful walk and a close-up view of those magical fairy chimneys!
