MAMMAL HANDS
Formed in Britain in 2012, the trio Mammal Hands consists of saxophonist Jordan Smart, pianist Nick Smart, and drummer-percussionist Rob Turner. Drawing on their mutual love of electronic, minimal and contemporary classical, world, folk music and jazz, the band take their influences from names such as Pharoah Sanders, Gétatchèw Mèkurya, Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Sirishkumar Manji for their compositions. The trio has a powerful group dynamic with their equal contribution to the writing process balanced by individual solo parts. Signed to Matthew Halsall’s eclectic and independent record label Gondwana Records, the band has released the albums ‘Animalia’, ‘Floa’, ‘Shadow Work’ ve ‘Captured Spirits’. Mammal Hands released their fifth studio album ‘Gift from the Trees’, in 2023. In this album, the trio made the effort to capture a deeper, more organic experience, closer to both their improvisational and almost telepathic writing process but also to their trance-like live performances. ‘Gift from the Trees’ brings together minimal compositions with floating melodies and modern drums, it also draws inspiration from Indian, Greek and Arabic music, as well as modern folk arrangements. Recorded in two sessions, the album reflects the two different moods of the Welsh environment outside the studio doors: one bleak and wintry, the other more hopeful and bright. You are invited to +1 Stage to listen to the minimal and layered sound of Mammal Hands, which will blend into Çiftlik Ev’s intimate atmosphere.
